Ski Areas in Geilo

Ski Areas in Geilo

There are three key areas in Geilo, located on either side of the Ustedalsfjord. These are linked by shuttle bus and offer quite different skiing terrain, with the majority of the green runs located on the Geiblia Vestlia Skisenter side which has the best nursery slopes in the resort.

The Geilohysen side is much steeper, home to the majority of the red and black runs whereas nearby Slatta has another learner area which is linked to more advanced slopes.

Geilo offers versatile pistes great for beginner and intermediate skiers. The 40km of slopes include beginner nursery slopes to challenging black runs. The wide and quiet pistes make for pleasurable skiing with most of the skiing within the treeline. There’s also a floodlit cross-country slope for those wanting to venture out in the evening.

Both sides of the resort have half pipes and the one at Geildia has a fun park adjacent to it. This has all sorts of features, from tabletops to rail slides and two gap jumps.

With a great variety of terrain on offer, snowboarders will enjoy the pistes of Geilo as much as they will the snowpark.

Geilo is 100% hydro-electric powered, with a wide-ranging action plan to help reduce its carbon footprint. Its efforts were recognised through the award it received in 2016 as a Sustainable Travel Destination – one of the first destinations in Norway to gain this quality mark. This was achieved through Geilo meeting several sustainable benchmarks, such as its excellent accessible public transport network, preservation of its local community and carefully protected Nation Park areas.

Geilo has two ski schools servicing different parts of the resort. We can take care of your ski school requirements and advise on what would work best. Ski schools can sell out quickly for peak dates with smaller class sizes in Norway. If you’re travelling during a peak week be sure to book these well in advance.

The Trollklubben crèche takes babies from six months through to children up to the age of 8 and it offers a brilliant array of activities; from sledging to singing and drawing to sculpture building. They’re conveniently situated at the base of the ski slopes, so you’ll easily be able to pop in throughout the day and collect your children once you’ve finished skiing.

You can choose to pay by the hour, day or week and they’re open every day from 9:30am – 3:30pm.

Geilo has some fantastic dining options dotted around its cosy and charming village. From classic Scandinavian cuisine to international flavours, there is something for every taste.

Restaurant Hallingstuene is a well-renowned spot in the centre of Geilo, with a traditional à la carte menu served up by famous chef, Frode Aga. Vestlia Restaurant, Bar & Lounge is a more contemporary eatery, with glamorous interiors and a decadent terrace for soaking up the sun. Highland Pizzeria is well worth a visit for its unparalleled homemade pizza and pasta dishes, crafted with fresh ingredients and Italian influence.

There are a number of lively bars more akin to European après in Geilo, where things start to get going at around 3pm – Dr Holms’ Bar is popular with locals and tourists alike. There are also some cosy and relaxed ski lounges where you can enjoy a more civilised drink after a day’s skiing, these tend to be within the resorts’ many hotels.

If you’re looking for a dancefloor later in the evening head to Off-Pist, which is found in the centre of the resort and is open to 2:30am.

Non-Skiers

Gelio offers many other traditional Scandinavian activities besides skiing. You can explore the beautiful Norwegian landscape whilst dog sledding with Geilo Husky, who will show you how to drive your own sled. You’ll also find an excellent mile-long toboggan run, ice fishing and snowmobiling (look our for deer and eagles) on offer within the resort.

Oslo and Bergen are both easily accessible by a scenic train journey so non-skiers can always explore two of Norway’s major cities and all they have to offer.
