Grimentz Ski Resort

Known for its off-piste opportunities, this small village offers a quaint and unique area of skiing. Part of Val d’Anniviers, Grimentz is spread out along a steep slope and divided between the old centre and the skiers’ accommodation. The quiet town is dotted with traditional wooden chalets and restaurants serving traditional Valais fayre. Situated at 1,570m, this traditional town is home to just 489 year-round inhabitants, making it a cultural jewel of unspoilt Swiss heritage.

It is mostly frequented by Swiss day-trippers and locals from nearby areas such as Sion, making it the ideal destination for the discerning skier looking for an authentic Alpine experience.

Ski Areas in Grimentz

The recent installation of the Sorebois 3km long cable car enabled access to the neighbouring region of Zinal; opening the ski area up to easy piste cruising on 43km of long red runs, a black run following the cable route back, and much more. This successfully enhanced the appeal of the area to the intermediate skier. In total, Grimentz spans 115km of pistes connected by 21 lifts; from which splendid panoramic views of the Rhone Valley can be enjoyed.

The main attraction of Grimentz is its off-piste and freeride skiing, much of which can be accessed by the lifts. Experts will love the variety of the terrain, ranging from a huge ski-anywhere bowl to a multitude of tree runs lower down in resort. The Bendolla ski area’s relaxed blues and reds are great for beginners, whilst its surrounding more difficult runs provide a welcome progression for the advancing skier.

The ESI ski school runs group lessons for children aged three years and above in the resort’s Snow Garden. This is easily accessible from the top of the gondola and features a magic carpet, various activities and educational materials. There is also a day-care centre in the Bendolla area for two-year olds, with hourly, half-day or full day options available to suit your needs.

Grimentz offers a good selection of restaurants, such as the Arlequin pizzeria or the l’Etable du Marais which serves fantastic traditional food in large portion sizes. Orzival is another local hotspot which comes recommended with great pasta and a cosy atmosphere. Up the mountain, you will find a range of Alpine huts in the Val d’Anniviers; such as the Restaurant d’Altitude de Sorebois situated at the top of the cable car and serving stunning views of the surrounding glaciers and summits.

Grimentz is more typically chosen for its peaceful mountain charm and uncrowded slopes – rather than the promised party atmosphere of its nearby counterparts, Zermatt or Verbier. Nonetheless, you will find a nice selection of cosy spots to enjoy local tipples in the late afternoon sun after a long day on the slopes. Le Country Pub is a superb wine bar offering karaoke, live music and a pool table; whilst Domino attracts a younger clientele with its darts board and snacks until 1am.

Whilst the keen skier will be out making the most of the powder, those looking for off-slope activities will enjoy touring the historic sites, learning about the Vin du Glacier wine, visiting the communal cattle shed and finding out what 19th century life was like in La Maison de Grand Maman.
