About Our Norwegian Ski Holidays
Skiing in Norway
Norway’s wide-open, quiet pistes are perfectly suited to beginners and intermediates.
- Families are well catered for with a number of gentle ski areas designed specifically for children
- More advanced skiers will love the thrill of exploring the untouched powder fields in Norway’s unique backcountry
- Regardless of ability, all skiers will be in awe of the magical views over fjords and frozen lakes as they discover the area.
Top Tip: Gausta’s green 14 piste is simply brilliant with a tree-lined run, hits and rollers, it’s not to be missed!
Ski Resorts in Norway
Norway’s ski areas are smaller and less interlinked than the Alps, but what they lack in scale they make up for in variety and character. Many of them consist of traditional mountain village resorts with terrific snow records.
- Trysil is Norway’s largest resort which spreads across the four connected areas and offers impeccable ski terrain and stunning scenery
- Hafjell and Kvitfjell share Olympic history from the 1994 Lillehammer Games and offer excellent intermediate terrain
- Hemsedal’s mountainous terrain gave it the nickname “Norway’s Alps”.
Our Ski Expert Ross’s Favourite Resorts
Kvitfjell
I simply love the snow quality here, even by Norway standards, Kvitfjell is superb. They have a great range of slopes and some excellent tree skiing. Not to mention their World Cup run. March is the optimum time to visit, with empty slopes and longer days.
Trysil
There’s no escaping how much investment Trysil has had of late: new mountain restaurants, a local airport and a modern gondola. Trysil is Norway’s most accessible resort and largest too. Making it a great segue for those who have been used to the Alps and still want that mountain meal and large ski area.
Myrkdalen
Myrkdalen is great for beginners and families, with a convenient layout, short airport transfers, and day trips to the fjords. It’s equally impressive for expert skiers with plenty of accessible advanced terrain and lots of easy-access off-piste.
Snowboarding in Norway
Norway’s terrain parks and long, cruisy runs make it a great destination for snowboarders of all levels.
- In Trysil, you’ll find the SkiStar Snow Park with jumps, rails and boxes
- Advanced riders should head to Totten or Røgjin Summits in Hemsedal if they’re looking for a challenge with excellent cliffs and powder
- Hemsedal also offers long runs such as Sahaugloypa or Turistloypa which allow you to build up speed and practise long turns.
Activities in Norway
Skiing is just part of the picture in Norway, where the surrounding wilderness offers plenty to do beyond the piste and is popular for non-skiing activities.
- Dog sledding, snowshoeing and sleigh rides are popular in resorts like Trysil and Geilo
- As Norway’s national pastime, there are thousands of kilometres of well-groomed cross-country trails through forests and vast plateaus
- Norway has great spa and wellness facilities, from huge saunas to outdoor hot tubs
- You can combine a fjord cruise alongside your ski holidays for panoramic views of Norway’s fjords.
Après Ski in Norway
The après ski scene in Norway is relatively quiet compared with the powerhouses of the Alps. However, there is a range of fantastic bars and cocktail clubs to visit.
- In Trysil, Laaven 1790 is the resort’s best-known après spot, with a sun-drenched terrace and table dancing from the afternoon
- Kirk’s bar in Gaustablikk Fjellresort in Gausta offers signature cocktails, hot drinks and shuffleboards
- You can find loads of cosy, cabin-style bars around the town gondola base in Voss like Skrot Kafé & Bar.
Sustainable Choice
Norway is a strong choice for a lower-carbon ski holiday with a strong national focus on sustainable tourism with hydro-powered resorts and passionate campaigning. Trysil was among the first destinations in Europe to earn sustainability certification for managing environmental impacts. Call our experts to find out more.
Food in Norway
Norwegian mountain dining is hearty and simple, made from local produce with traditional Scandinavian flavours.
- You must try an authentic dish such as reindeer stew, cured salmon or traditional fish dishes
- Cosy mountain lodges serve warming soups and stews to keep you energised between runs
- Cinnamon buns and waffles with brown cheese are a Norwegian ski-day staple.
Top Tip: Gausta’s Gaustablikk hotel has a superb tasting menu if you’re looking for authentic Norwegian food.
Ski Weekends in Norway
Escape to Norway for a ski weekend next winter.
- Many of the ski resorts can be reached in just 90 minutes from the airport. Ensure you get your ski fix over a long weekend

Snow in Norway
The dry snow that Norway experiences means the skiing is unique for Europe, far closer resembling the conditions of North America. Many areas are so confident of their snow quality that they guarantee your lift pass and will refund you if conditions aren’t up to standard. Norway’s ski season is long, starting in November and lasting until late April.
