Our Ski Expert James Visits Andermatt

A fantastic couple of days’ in Andermatt reminded me how much I love Switzerland. I was fortunate enough to stay at Andermatt’s most prestigious address, The Chedi, and I’d like to share my recommendations for Andermatt below…

Where to stay?

Landing at Zürich airport, I stayed the night at the turreted Dolder Grand in Zürich. A stunning hotel overlooking the lake and Zurich old town, it’s a great choice if you need a night in Zürich. My room was spacious, art adorned the walls throughout and there’s a large spa with an outdoor hot tub.

The next morning we set off for Andermatt, the journey took around an hour and a half. I was very much looking forward to staying at The Chedi. Opposite the train station and centrally located, The Chedi is just a short walk to shops and restaurants. The hotel’s shuttle is available too if you’d rather not walk. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, and you can choose between double rooms, suites and apartments; I’d recommend a room with mountain views.

The entertainment system had a fantastic choice of films that were recently aired in the cinema. I’d heard that the spa was magnificent and it’s true. Many guests come just to relax here, with an indoor and outdoor pool, two saunas and hot pools varying in temperature. Above all, I was very impressed with the very helpful ski concierge and butler, nothing seemed too tall an ask.

Where to eat?

During our stay, we dined well at the hotel’s restaurant with excellent Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and Japanese options. For instance, the Michelin-starred Japanese Restaurant serves freshly-made sushi with one out of only three sake experts in Switzerland ready to pair your plate.

Breakfast and dinner were in the main restaurant, with such fantastic choices. I had a superb Asian sharing meal for dinner, so I was able to try lots of delicately made, delicious plates. There is also a large room dedicated to cheese that is spectacular, with so many different variations to try and paired with the correct wine.

Visiting Andermatt reminded me how much I love Switzerland, with its fascinating history, old church and charming atmosphere. From The Chedi, you can easily access the Nätschen ski area, which is family orientated with confidence-boosting runs. On the other hand, a five-minute walk away is Gemsstock, where you will find more challenging runs with excellent off piste.

You can ski into the heart of the village from both Nätschen and Gemsstock and lifts run smoothly. There’s a new link this season between Disentis and Sedrun, therefore opening up an area of 200km of pistes. Thanks to this extensive ski terrain, the area is suitable for families and advanced skiers.

My highlights

The hotel is a big draw to Andermatt, whether you’re a skier or not. During my stay, everyone at the hotel was very chatty and keen to help, the rooms were very spacious and the food was delicious. Most importantly, Andermatt has plenty of charm and history and as a ski resort is very convenient. In addition, it’s just a short walk to get into town or to the slopes, and The Chedi’s shuttle always on hand.
