Situated on the country’s western coast, Bergen exudes charm and has a rich cultural history dating back to the year 1070. In the Middle Ages the city was the capital of Norway due to its seaport and important role in the Hanseatic League, a confederation of merchants who dominated trading in the North and Baltic Seas for over 400 years. Nowadays, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage site, bound by seven unbelievable mountains.

Bergen’s lush green hills tower above the quaint pastel-coloured houses as the pointed red-tiled roofs ascend into the sky. Traditional fishmongers, restaurants and boutiques are dotted along the seafront, a fabulous place for a stroll. Why not enjoy a wander during the day, taking in the bold colours and admiring the stunning views? By night, walk along the seafront again and view the vast selection of ferries, boats and yachts as their lights reflect in the dark sea. Credited by gaining status as a European City of Culture in 2000, Bergen has long been renowned for all it has to offer. From a fabulous range of museums to an incredible funicular railway which climbs up Mount Fløyen, where you can absorb breath-taking views.

In 2015, Bergen became a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, which builds on their millennium of history as a trading centre for cultural and culinary traditions. Surrounded by deep sea and fjords, the city is famous for its seafood so a visit to one of their many exquisite restaurants shouldn’t be missed. Cornelius Seafood Restaurant is one of the best in Norway and is accessed by a boat trip through the fjords. The menu here is inspired by the day’s fresh catches from the fjords.
