Serre Chevalier ski resort is a rustic mountain region with a collection of unique buildings spread out along a large valley. These vary between ultra-modern hamlets to old-style, traditional villages. The ski resort has the advantage of some of the best lift access, with both a gondola and a cable-car to whisk you up into the midst of the wider skiing area.

Often considered the hidden gem of the southern French Alps, Serre Chevalier ski resort has four villages that share a vast 250km of skiing terrain. With something to suit skiers and snowboarders of all abilities, Serre Chevalier is the ideal ski resort for families and groups alike.

The ski resort has fantastic freeride terrain to explore. The high bowls at L’Eychauda and below the Pic de L’Yret are popular spots to drop into. There's plenty of off piste skiing terrain making it one of the best powder spots in France. Freestylers will be pleased to know that there’s a state-of-the-art terrain park to enjoy. 

The villages themselves have traditional French mountain architecture. There are cobbled streets with small local shops, cosy bars and restaurants. Serre Chevalier ski resort also has excellent childcare facilities. Each village has its quiet nightlife spots. There isn’t a party atmosphere in the ski resort, however, you can have a quiet relaxing drink after a day on the mountain instead.

Skiing in Serre Chevalier

The skiing in Serre Chevalier will suit all levels. Beginner skiers will find the runs around Frejus suited to their level with many long, easy pistes to build up technique. Intermediates have plenty of great, well-maintained pistes in between Chantemerle and Villeneuve to carve their way down. Serre Chevalier ski resort is a freeride paradise and there is a plethora of full-on, freeride sections that you will struggle to get through in a week of skiing.

Snowboarding in Serre Chevalier

Snowboarders will be well suited to Serre Chevalier. Beginners can find some great nursery areas for learning on but may feel grieved by the number of drag lifts in the area. Intermediates and advanced riders will have the most fun as there are plenty of fast, long slopes and cruisey wide blues. Freeriders will have plenty of off-piste that they can access without having to hike to the best sections. Serre Chevalier also has one of the best terrain parks in the French Alps.

The ski schools are great in Serre Chevalier ski resort. The ESF has a Piou-Piou Club for children from the age of three years old who are taking their first steps on the snow. The Garderie des Poussins is an ESF daycare that looks after children from eight months to six years old.

Restaurants in Serre Chevalier

Serre Chevalier ski resort has a good amount of restaurants, all of which have their own character and serve fantastic food. La Marotte is one of the most popular restaurants and is known for its superb steak tartare and innovative cuisine. If you’re looking for your typical Savoyard experience there isn’t any better than Allo Raclette. For a cheap and cheerful lunch try Le Relais de Ratier on the slopes for some extremely affordable and tasty dishes.

Après Ski in Serre Chevalier

Serre Chevalier is a fairly quiet ski resort, so those looking for a more lively party should head to the neighbouring town of Les Deux Alpes. La Grotte is the town's most popular bar, with a happy hour in the evenings. L’Alpen is a British run bar which is also extremely popular with seasonnaires and visitors alike. Le Frog is another bar that is frequented mainly by the British after the lifts shut, and has everything you’d want from a pub including modest prices and live music.

Non-Skiers

For the non-skier, there is quite a choice; Serre Chevaliers' famous ice racing circuit, snowshoeing, quad biking, paragliding, skijoring (a horse pulling you on skis), rides in horse-drawn carriages or try climbing ice falls. In Monetier, you will find Les Grands Bains, an establishment with inside and outside thermal swimming pools supplied by natural hot and mineralized water.

Sustainable Choice

Serre Chevalier is one of a select few ski resorts to hold the Green Globe certification – a standard recognised as the highest in the world for sustainability, through a structured assessment of sustainable operation and management enterprises. The resort achieved this status through being the first to produce its own electricity that combines three types of renewable power – hydro, photovoltaics and micro-wind turbines. The resort also uses a local company called Sunwind, who provide unique flexible solar panels that are installed directly onto existing infrastructures and lift stations.
