Kicking Horse is one of the newer Canadian ski resorts with the greatest powder up top. Named after an infamous incident involving a British geologist in 1858, this young village is already very much alive and kicking from its nest amongst the sweeping, tree-lined mountains, above the town of Golden. Two magnificent peaks loom above, both sewn with a tapestry of rippling blues, several long winding greens and some tasty blacks.
Since the millennium, Kicking Horse has kicked a little harder each year. Formerly a tiny hill with just one or two lifts, the ski resort has become a proper mountain village since a gondola was built to scale Eagle’s Eye Peak far above. Luxury accommodation now lines the ski resort and more bars and restaurants are popping up each year, including the popular Eagle’s Eye mountain restaurant at 2,345m.

With 100km of piste and five lifts, Kicking Horse is one of the smaller ski resorts in Canada, yet don't mistake it for an easy ride. The resort has a reputation for being a hard ski with difficult terrain - perfect to challenge expert skiers. This, however, is not to say there isn't anything for beginners with one chairlift solely dedicated for them.
The Golden Eagle Express will get you right to the top of the mountain in no time. How you get down again is your decision. Take your pick from undulating bowls, chutes and wooded tree runs, or make your way to Blue Heaven Peak and play in the powder for hours. Experts will love the short, sharp blacks and bumper moguls in the woods whilst beginners can enjoy good nursery slopes further down the mountain.
Wide open slopes mean freeride snowboarders will enjoy riding the mountains in Kicking Horse. With nearly the entire upper bowl hosting freeride terrain, the resort is a boarders haven. A large number of chutes as well as off-piste with natural hits make it ideal for intermediate to expert snowboarders.
The Telus Winter Sports School will help you learn to ski and ride while having fun. Whether it’s your first day on the slopes or you are wanting to hone in on your skis, the instructors will help you build confidence and make your learning experience memorable. The school caters to all ability levels where programs are designed to meet your needs, from group lessons to private lessons.
Kicking Horse resort hosts daycare for children, from 18 months to 5 years, for either a half-day or full-day. There is also the possibility of an additional option through the daycare centre called 'Adventure Hour' where a ski instructor will take your child out for a one to two hour lesson.
The Eagle Eye restaurant situated at over 2,300m is a must visit - expect tasty gourmet food and panoramic views over surrounding mountain ranges and five different national parks. There are also a number of different restaurants located in the village including the Copperhorse Steakhouse known for its amazing dining experience.
Après-ski can be found at Peaks Grill at the base of the resort or alternatively the Whitetooth Grill. The Local Hero Pub also has music, beers and a blazing outdoor fire on their patio - so you can enjoy both après and the scenery.
Non-skiers can enjoy other winter activities including snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice skating. The nearest town of Golden is also only 20 minutes from the resort and offers a diverse and vibrant yet authentic town to explore.
