Hotel Madlein

Having undergone a rather whacky revamp, the Madlein has emerged as one of the coolest hotels in the Alps and part of the chic Design Hotels marketing group. According to the hotel, they have drawn on Zen philosophy to create a modern style unlike any other Alpine hotel. There is a Zen Garden for quiet contemplation, a "Fire-Room" for chilling-out as well as the trendy Pacha nightclub - an offshoot of the Ibiza superclub - which has replaced the old Wunderbar. With a redesigned pool, gym and spa area, this hotel is set to be come one of the most sought-after in Ischgl. Featured in Hip Hotels Ski.

Not all the rooms have been refurbished and so there are still signs of the older, dark wood, rustic style in the standard category. 'Komfort' rooms have been updated with lighter wood, new bathrooms and Laura Ashley fabrics. There are nine 'Design' rooms which reflect the modern redesign with Phillipe Starck bathrooms and modern art on the walls.

Resort details

Ischgl ski resort is one of the most impressive in Austria with a great reputation for its après ski scene and superb skiing. Many natives would rate it as one of the best ski resorts, with a long season and a reliable natural snow record.

The village itself is long and narrow and comprises a mixture of original and faux-Tyrolean buildings. The main street is effectively traffic-free and there’s an underground walkway from the centre of town to the Fimba gondola. There is absolutely no shortage of bars, restaurants and shops lining the pavements.

Thanks to its efforts to offset carbon emissions, the implementation of a reforestation programme in the local valley and powering its ski lifts with almost 100% renewable energy, Ischgl ski resort has been recognised as the largest climate-neutral ski area in the Alps.
