France Snow

The story in France on Monday 20th of February was of lovely, sunny weather but with variable snow conditions. The holiday crowds mean that much of the grippy snow disappears as the day goes on, leaving slopes hard packed and icy in places. Generally, however, slopes remain good right down to resort. The sun was shining in the Portes du Soleil today with most areas still holding decent snow cover. The best skiing is probably in Avoriaz (90/120cm). Beware of slopes getting a little icy and hard late on, caused in part by the cold and shade but mostly by the sheer quantity of traffic on the slopes. Chatel (30/75cm) is about ready to burst right now, with queues being especially bad at the Linga telecabine lift. The sun was also out in Flaine (63/195cm) where slopes were in mostly good condition despite being variable in quality. At the top, slopes could be hard packed, especially where shaded, whereas where exposed to the sun, slopes softened up fast. There were some interesting conditions to report in Font Romeu (130cm) where lots of snow plus warm temperatures and blazing sunshine have led to some early spring conditions. Expect runs to be hard on the legs. In Villard de Lans (35/80cm), there was no natural snow at the bottom of the mountain, and resort runs were made of artificial snow. Head up high for the best skiing there.
