I’ve just returned from a couple of days skiing in Sölden in Austria, staying at Hotel Das Central. I have chosen some of my top recommendations on where to sleep, eat and the atmosphere of this snow-sure Austrian resort. In addition to fantastic skiing conditions and varied terrain, I visited the James Bond 007 Elements experience and ate delicious food, read my highlights in Sölden here.
I stayed at the centrally located Hotel Das Central. In the evening, it was nice to warm up by the fire with a bottle of prosecco before a delicious five-course dinner. Despite sounding a lot, I found the vegetarian menu light and we shared a reasonably-priced bottle of local Austrian wine.
The staff were friendly and made checking in and out seamless. Our rooms were spacious and extremely comfortable with en-suite bathrooms and beautiful views over the mountains. As its customary to be naked in steam rooms and saunas in Austria, we had a dip in the pool and the whirlpool, leaving the sauna and steam room to the others!
As Sölden is well-known for its reliable snow and glacier skiing, there is a young, lively crowd here. The skiing was very varied skiing and easy to navigate, and I thought it would make a great short break for keen skiers. Après ski is a mix between Austrian Euro pop and live bands and tends to wrap up at around 8pm.
The skiing was fantastic, it had been snowing the day before and we had perfect conditions. We visited the 007 Elements experience and the plane Bond flew while chasing the villain. The interactive museum was really interesting and for the rest of the day we felt as though we were following in his footsteps!
