Chalet Des Neiges

If you went in the Funival or the La Daille bubbles last winter, you passed close by, while if you took the Les Etroits chairlift you practically went overhead. The building is next to the Toit du Monde restaurant at La Daille, on a little unskied island, overlooking the bottom of the OK, Orange, Diebold and Verte runs.

Being right on the pistes is great. Getting to the slopes is no longer a chore, and queueing for buses a thing of the past. To shed a layer of clothing, you just dump it as you pass. Most people have their first run of the day on these runs, and some seldom leave them. They offer skiing for every standard, ultra-quick lifts back up and guaranteed snow from snow cannons top to bottom. And once the lifts close, they become a YOZ, lethal with tearaway toddlers on toboggans!

A few hundred metres up the slopes are the sunny terraces of the Fruitiere and Trifollet, where a therapeutic drink or two to music, techno at the Fruitiere, everything but at the Trif, set one up nicely at the end of the day for the final schuss home to a hot bath.

There is a small sauna in the basement, and each bedroom has a private ski locker in the ski room, with very effective individual boot warmers.

Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère is probably the resort that has access to the best all-round ski area in the world, the Espace Killy With just over 100 lifts compared to the 300 to be found in the Trois Vallées, the Espace Killy is obviously not the largest ski area in the world, but size isn’t everything and this region has as much skiing as one could ever need, not to mention the longest winter in the Alps. (The winter ski season here begins in late November and continues until early May and the early- and late-season conditions are seldom disappointing.

The main centre of Val d'Isere has been virtually rebuilt over the past 25 years and many of the buildings are imaginative contemporary interpretations of the traditional stone and wood Savoyard style.

Val d'Isere ski holidays were revolutionised with the introduction of apres-ski in the 80s when Dick Yates-Smith set up the seminal bar-nightclub, known as Dicks Tea-Bar.
