Some surprisingly good skiing in this state more famed for beaches and celebrities. Lots of snow falls here in the Sierras (although it does tend to be heavier then that of Utah or Colorado). Where else can one ski in the morning jump in a car and be at the sand and surf for sundowners?

HEAVENLY
Fantastic views to die for combined with a large ski area and a town partly taken over by the Casino culture. If you fancy Black runs by day and blackjack by night - this is the resort for you. A new village gondola has connected the ski area with the bulk of the lodging in Heavenly, which has seen $40million of investments in the last few years. The centrally located Embassy Suites , tranquil shoreside Lakeland Village and casino resort, the MontBleu are all recommended.

SQUAW VALLEY
The weekend destination of glamorous San Franciscans, Squaw which is 40 minutes from Heavenly is quiet during the week and busy at weekends. Gnarly bowls combine with gentle runs and one of the best mountain top pools we have ever seen. The Resort at Squaw Creek is a very good lodging option.

MAMMOTH
A colossal mountain with lots of snow (over 50ft last season) and one of the longest ski seasons anywhere. Great skiing for all standards. Busy with the LA crowd at weekends but quiet during the week. The Intrawest developed Village at Mammoth and 5 star Westin Monarche Resort are the pick of the accommodation options.
